Project EXCITE Timeline

Three total cohorts (approximately 65 teacher participants from 15 schools) will participate over the seven year duration of the project. Each participant may earn up to 10 graduate/UG credit hours and receive a $1,000 stipend.

Phase 1: Teacher Enrichment

School teams (including at least four teachers representing a variety of disciplines, a BGSU undergraduate science student teacher, a school administrator, and a community partner) will examine national and state educational recommendations, explore the project-based learning instructional model and collect and analyze both primary and secondary sources of data as they investigate an EHS issue. Teams will extensively use technology to access information, collect and analyze data, and communicate the findings of their investigations.

Phase 1:

May 2005, Kickoff Retreat

June 2005, 2 wk Summer Institute with school teams

Phase 2: Planning & Implementation

The school teams will design (fall) and implement (spring) a local EHS module during the first academic year. This module will be modified and repeated in the second academic year in conjunction with the phase three activities. The modules will reflect contemporary educational reform recommendations, will be interdisciplinary, and will be correlated to local, state, and national learning outcomes in science, math, language arts, social sciences, health, and technology.

Phase 2:

Fall 2005, Local Module Planning & Development

Fall 2005-Winter 2006, ZoOdyssey Module Implementation

Spring 2006, Local Module Implementation

May 2006, Research Colloquium @ COSI Toledo

Phase 3: Publication & Dissemination

School teams will participate in a one-week summer institute to further refine their units for publication and dissemination. Changes and additions will be made based upon the results of field-testing during the first academic year. Continuing into the second academic year, teams will work with Project EXCITE, local scientists, and the Ohio Department of Education to develop a professional dissemination product. The developed EHS modules will be available to local, regional, state and national organizations.

 Phase 3:

July 2006, 1 wk Summer Institute

Fall 2006, Local Module prep for Publication & Dissemination

Fall 2006-Winter 2007, ZoOdyssey Module Implementation

Spring 2007, Local Module Implementation

May 2007, Research Colloquium @ COSI Toledo

Summer 2007, Final Project wrap-up and publication of Local Modules
