Project EXCITE Teams
School teams of 4 or more teachers, from a variety of disciplines, participate in Project EXCITE for a two-year period. During this time, Project Staff aid teachers in networking with community agencies, local scientists, and BGSU faculty. Project EXCITE also provides instructional resources and support.
During each two-year period, teachers participate in the following professional development experiences:
Spring Kick Off: Teams attend an overnight retreat to gain or deepen their understanding of problem-based learning (PBL) and Environmental Health Science (EHS). Team building and group process skills are also developed. Teams begin their search for relevant local EHS issues.
Summer 1: Teams attend a two-week summer institute immersing them in an authentic PBL experience and beginning the development of their local EHS Odyssey.
Academic Year 1: Teams create and implement their EHS problem-based learning Odyssey focusing on a relevant local issue. Monthly campus meetings focus on the design process, and local team meetings allow teams to coordinate plans and delegate tasks. In late spring, EXCITE student groups present their investigations and solutions at an Annual EHS Research Colloquium sponsored by COSI Toledo.
Summer 2 : Teams refine their local Odysseys and begin to prepare their materials for publication.
Academic Year 2 : Teams re-implement and further refine their local Odysseys. In late spring, new EXCITE student groups present their investigations and solutions, again, at the Annual EHS Research Colloquium at COSI Toledo.
See the main Get Involved page for details on other perks of being involved with EXCITE!
